Stalbridge Cricket Club Development XI v Sturminster & Hinton on Sat 13 Jul 2019 at 1:30pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Lost by 165 runs
Match report
Tough day for the 2's against our local rivals. Having lost the toss and being set to field it Stur looked to get off to a flyer, putting on 35 runs in the opening four overs. However, Stalbridge then fought back and had an excellent first half to the game, with the skipper (8-0-68-1) and R. Payne (7-0-54-1) pegging Stur back and dismissing both openers. A really tight spell from W. Coleman (8-0-39-0) coupled with good opening spells from the skip and Robbie had Stur 100/2 at the halfway mark. Frustratingly, Stalbridge just could not pick up the wickets they needed to stop Stur going big at the death. Sturminster & Hinton were only at 155 with ten overs to go, but with two set batsman at the crease laid into the returning opening bowlers to rocket their way to 275. It must be said though, that Stalbridge fielded excellently, and Sturminster could have made an extra 25 or so without some wonderful stops.
With the bat things got off to a steady start despite an early wicket, with W. Coleman (13) and R. Payne (11) ensuring that the all to frequent top order collapse did not occur. Instead, Stalbridge decided a middle-order collapse was the order of the day. With wickets falling regularly it was always going to be an ask to make a decent total, but some fine hitting from J. Hodgeson (38) and a cameo from T. Jeans (13) ensured that the team made it to 110 and secured two vital batting points. Shoutouts to Br.Pattle (7) and RDS.Brown (1*) who both hung in with Jasper for long periods allowing him to counter attack.
We are away to Corfe Mullen next week, looking for that elusive win! Thanks also to George for coming as scorer, a role I hope he will continue in.
