Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI v Puddletown on Sat 24 Jul 2021 at 1:30 pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs

Match report Finally, we won a toss, courtesy of the opposition captain calling wrong, and with a slightly dodgy weather forecast, we opted to bowl first. We were on the money from ball one and gave the batsmen absolutely nothing, with Stu bowling the opener with the last ball of the first over. He beat the bat of the number 3 so many times during his opening 6 over spell but could not dislodge him, as he ended up being the only batsman in the match to score over 20 runs. Si (2-13) took over from Steve, who had bowled a tight opening 4 over spell but felt a slight twinge in his hamstring. He took the wickets of the other opener, courtesy of an LBW to a ball which kept low, and the opposing captain, who edged to Warney at slip. At the halfway point, we were all over them with the score at 30-3. Unfortunately, during our spell of dominance, Dikey badly injured his finger whilst trying to take a catch at mid-on, and Harry Forshaw joined the action as a sub fielder. We continued to apply pressure though, with excellent spells from Fordy (2-25) and Will Coleman (2-10), who bagged the number 3 with an excellent ball which dragged him out of his crease and Jon duly completing the stumping. We couldn't quite take the last wicket, but we had to be satisfied with restricting them to 103-9.

We didn't do ourselves justice with the bat for the second time in three weeks; however, we were not helped by some questionable (at best) LBW decisions, Warney being the first unfortunate victim. Stu scooped a wide one to backward point in an almost carbon copy of his dismissal at Weymouth the previous week, and Bushy followed shortly after to leave us 24-3. Fordy, who was a late replacement in the team due to Josh having to withdraw, had batted well for his 18, but became the second LBW of the innings. Si and Wiz tried to dig in and saw off the opening bowler, but Si immediately chipped a tame catch to midwicket and Steve was cleaned up the very next ball by a decent yorker, leaving us with an uphill struggle at 41-6. Ben and Will batted well to take the score to 59, but runs were hard to come by and Ben eventually lofted a catch to mid-on. Jon's LBW was a shocker, middling the ball on to his pad, and Robbie played on, leaving us 66 all out, with Dikey at hospital and unable to bat. Huge credit to Wiz (19*), who knuckled down and showed the sort of technique and application which most of us were lacking.

A very disappointing result, but the focus now must be on finishing second in the league and ending the season strongly.
