Portland Red Triangle v Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 31 Jul 2021 at 1:30 pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Lost by 91 runs

Match report We went into this game with a much-changed and somewhat depleted side, against a Portland team who had won three games on the bounce; this included becoming the only team to beat title winners-elect Puddletown. Portland won the toss and elected to bat, but we were slightly delayed by a brief shower which we hoped might spice up the interesting-looking (to put it mildly) wicket. Steve duly got rid of one half of the opening partnership thanks to a good catch from Toby Jeanes, who was deputising behind the stumps and did an excellent job, with some of the bowlers' radars being somewhat off throughout the innings! After a couple of crunching boundaries, Steve also dismissed the skipper, as a defensive shot took the top of the bat and lobbed to Josh at point. Rob Payne and Fordy took over, with Rob having to bowl through the pain barrier during his spell of 8 overs; however, he did manage to pick up a good wicket with a ball that moved in the air and off the pitch, which left the score at 54-3 after 11 overs. The fourth wicket partnership was the one that got away from us though, and our lack of depth in our bowling attack was exposed. Fordy managed to pick up two wickets in his second spell, one of them an excellent caught and bowled which was smashed back at him very hard! The number 5 continued on his merry way though, bringing up his century in the final over, and taking Portland to a formidable score of 266-5, not helped by the 40 wides we bowled.

Ferg was run out in the fifth over of the reply, before Warney and Fordy rebuilt slightly to take us to 35. Josh then added 50 with Warney (42), taking a sensible approach, but unfortunately a clatter of wickets meant we fell from 85-3 to 95-6. Steve and Toby added 39 for the 8th wicket, with Toby making a typically belligerent 21 off 11 balls with three 4s and a 6. Kev Forsey smacked a few boundaries in a final wicket partnership of 18 with Steve, who finished on an excellent 36* with five 4s and a six.

This meant we took 7 points from the game, a respectable effort given the difficulties we had getting eleven players on the pitch.
