Stalbridge Cricket Club Development XI v Blandford 2nd XI on Sat 09 Jul 2022 at 13:30
Stalbridge Cricket Club Lost by 82 runs
Match report
The first game of the back end of the season was a disappointing defeat for the Devs, although with lots of positive individual performances.
Having lost the toss and been made to field on a particularly warm day, the team got off to a bit of a poor start as Blandford raced to 74 in the opening four overs. A key wicket came from Harry F, the first of six (all clean-bowled) as the Bridge looked to reign things back in. All things considered, having effectively started 74 behind, the performance was fantastic. Harry F continued to pick up key wickets, until Jonny S and Oscar W continued to pick off the batsmen in the middle order. The aggressive bowling up the hill was made possible by tight spells from the skipper and Sam F, with Luke H getting in on the action toward the end. Harry F came back to complete his haul of six wickets with a second spell of 1.3-0-11-3!
Facing a big chase, Stalbridge repeated their first innings antics of making a poor start and fell to 9-3 in the third over. Jonny S (47) and the skip (18) put of fifty for the fourth wicket before one kept low. With the score on 64/4 at the halfway stage, chasing the runs was always going to be an ask, but some uncharacteristically sensible batting from S Foster (11) and a brilliant knock from J Lews (23), guided the team towards the three figure mark. Unfortunately for Stalbridge, A Sullivan then took a hattrick - all of which were excellent deliveries - and sent the team crashing to 101/9. The tail wagged, however, with Rich Brown (1*) supporting Josh L en-route to 131 all out.
Despite the heavy defeat, the performance was actually very good, and with a better start (to both innings) Stalbridge probably could have run this one very close. The wonderful Portland away to come next week.
