Match report
A lovely sunny day for a long away trip to Symondsbury saw a hotly contested contest between the two sides. Losing the toss (of course) and being put into bat, the Devs got off to a strong start. The openers put on 41 before C. Mckinnon (15) fell in the 13th over. A stand of 81 for the second wicket between the J. Guthrie (46) and M. Coleman (45), neither of whom seemed to want their fifties, took the Devs well past the drinks interval and set a good platform at 122/2 with 13-overs still to bat. Some good hitting in the middle-order from T. Lomas-Walker (16), J. Lewis (17) and H. Lewis (16) got the team tantalisingly close to the double-ton, setting 199 for Cat & Sym to better.
Opening with a combination of pace and spin, things got off to a terrific start in the field. H. Lewis (5-0-26-1 & 2-0-11-0) and O. White (8-0-40-2) did the damage and reduced Cat & Sym to 24/3 at one stage, including a terrific caught & bowled by Oscar at full stretch. Cat & Sym battled well in the period that followed, and soon their numbers four and five grew in confidence and began to take the attack to Stalbridge. Frustratingly for the Devs, a few chances came and went, all of them quite difficult catches, and by the time the partnership was broken after drinks the batting side had recovered to 133/4. It should still have been game-on at that stage, but some serious hitting from the S. Challis (92*) soon accelerated the score. The crowd were, however, given the rare opportunity late in the day to experience the "bowling" of C. Mckinnon.
We go again next week, and take the positives from a top batting performance, some skilful bowling and 7pts.
