Puddletown v Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 22 May 2021 at 1:30 pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report For the third week in a row, we were faced with an uncertain weather forecast on the day which had followed another week of awful weather. It was somewhat surprising when Puddletown confirmed that the game (played at the picturesque Plush ground due to Puddletown's artificial wicket) would go ahead, particularly as the pitch had been uncovered. To call it a typical 'pudding' wicket would not be an understatement...

Unfortunately the toss was won by Puddletown who gleefully accepted the chance to insert us into bat. The pitch was predictably slow, with every ball making a considerable indentation on the wicket. Stu (4) was bowled by a slower ball, having played his shot about half an hour too early, before Bushy and Colin took the score to 45 with some patient and sensible batting. Unfortunately they were both out in quick succession as well as Rupert, leaving us 51-4 after 17 overs. Si and Jimmer rebuilt slightly, taking the score to 78, before Si was also bowled playing half an hour too early. This was followed by a good partnership of 40 between Jimmer and Dikey, which laid a platform for us to attack in the final overs. A couple of late blows from Steve, including a huge six over the leg side, took us to a final score of 148-9, which we had to be pretty pleased with given the conditions.

Stu struck in the first over, clean bowling the opener who had made his intentions clear from ball one, and Steve picked up the second wicket with the score on 27, caught by Jimmer at slip via a deflection off Jon. Despite some good tight bowling from Dikey and Jimmer in particular, we were unable to pick up further wickets until the score had reached 102, Howie taking a catch at deep square leg. We managed to pick up some more late wickets to gain an extra couple of bowling points, but the third wicket partnership had done the damage and Puddletown never really looked like losing after that. Jimmer bowled well to finish with four wickets, and we had done well to take it as deep as we did, with the game being won in the 38th over in the end.

A creditable performance and I don't think we could've done any more given the conditions we faced. Unfortunately it was a crucial toss to lose.
