Weymouth v Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 17 Jul 2021 at 1:30 pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 11 runs
Match report
On a scorching hot day, to say we were somewhat shocked by Weymouth's decision to bowl first would be an understatement; nevertheless, we were very grateful for it! We soon found though that this was not going to be an easy task. The wicket was not particularly quick and the outfield even less so, meaning we were going to have to work for every run, with not too many boundaries seemingly available. Stu and Warney, making his first team return, battled to 39 before Stu chased a wide one and was caught at gully for 18, quickly followed by Colin, who dragged one back onto his stumps. Warney was joined by Josh, and they intelligently accumulated runs where they could, but they had to be patient, particularly in the face of some impressive spin bowling from the opposing captain, Mitchell. It was a fantastic partnership of 88 which spanned from the 14th to the 36th over, until Josh was stumped looking to add late runs for a well-made and very important 34. Si was able to add a quick 26, dispatching his second ball over long-on for 6, with both he and Warney being dismissed in the final over. Warney was run out for a match-winning 64, a superb effort given the circumstances. We were happy enough with our final score, having once again added 72 in the final 10 overs, but were aware that it was only a shade above 4 an over required.
We later found out part of their decision to bowl first was influenced by one of their players having to leave at 4:30pm, and having taken so long to bowl their overs, this meant he was not going to be able to bat. Steve took the first wicket with his third ball, and took the second in his third over, caught by Stu at extra-cover. However, both Stu, and initially Ben, struggled to find their rhythm from the other end, and the third wicket partnership began to build, well in line with the required run rate. Another tight spell from Dikey made the breakthrough thanks to a sharp stumping from Jon, and the very next ball the dangerous Beals popped up a catch to Warney, fielding in close on the leg side. This made the score 78-4 after 20 overs, but we still needed to get rid of Womble, who was going well. Stu returned from the other end to try to nip out a couple of wickets and duly bowled their captain, but we still couldn't get the one we wanted. In fact, although we took wickets at the other end, it took until the 37th over to get rid of him, with the score having got far too close for comfort. Steve (3-26) returned with an impressive spell and bowled him behind his legs as he was clearly tiring. We then closed the game out relatively comfortably, but it was certainly not comfortable before we took that key wicket.
A well-fought win in tough conditions - well played all.
