Match report
Depending on which forecast you'd read prior to this game, it was either going to rain all day or we were going to abandon the game not long after starting (or so we thought). As it turned out, neither of these were correct and we got a game in, albeit slightly reduced by rain. A wet outfield meant we started twenty minutes late, somewhat pointlessly when the conditions were neither sunny nor windy enough to dry the ground in these twenty minutes. This meant we were reduced to a 37 over game, which became 35 overs when we were further interrupted by rain during the first innings. Having won the toss, unfortunately we then let Marnhull get off to a bit of a flier, with too many wides and loose balls letting them reach 28-0 after 4 overs. Stu bowled Ash Young in the fifth over, but James Vitali and Eddie Clements then took the score to 89 in the 19th over with relative ease, although we had tightened up after our poor start. Ben Pattle (2-27) made a key double breakthrough by dismissing both batsmen in the same over, trapping Clements (13) LBW, then clean bowling Vitali for a well-played 39 with some eye-catching cover drives, although he had been given a life by this point. We continued to pick up wickets more regularly though the second half of the innings, with Si clean bowling all four of his victims, but the score also continued to progress. The final score was 195-8 from 35 overs, which was revised to a target of 199 as we'd been rain-interrupted during the innings. The wicket was good, but this would still prove to be a tough chase.
Stu and Warney set about the task very sensibly and watchfully to start off with in the face of some disciplined Marnhull bowling, and even though we weren't quite keeping up with the required run rate, the feeling was that if we kept wickets in hand and did not let it get too far away from us, we had enough batting to get the runs required. They put on an excellent partnership of 126 for the first wicket and were not parted until the 25th over, when Warney was bowled for 38. With the run rate still achievable but increasing, Ferg was unable to get going and we then lost the crucial wickets of Stu (79) and Jimmer in the 30th over. We battled to get close to their score but lost wickets at regular intervals with big shots required, with Wiz (12) and Fordy (11*) the only other batsmen to threaten the target and reach double figures. We eventually fell 13 runs short of the revised 199, but did pick up 3 bonus points and therefore a respectable 12 points in total.
Our third loss in a row, and a tough one to take as we made life hard for ourselves with the way we started. We have to be switched on mentally and fully prepared to play a full game, even if the forecast suggests otherwise. Three games left to finish the season strongly and not let the good results from the first half of the season go to waste.
