Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI v Swanage 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 13:30
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 94 runs

Match report Having lost the toss for the first time in a number of weeks, we were asked to bat by Swanage, quite possibly due to an uncertain weather forecast. Fortunately it proved an excellent toss to have lost, as the pitch played well, with some good lift and carry down the hill. More importantly, Jimmer and Warney played even better in their opening partnership of 161. Warney played his best knock of the season so far, timing the ball sweetly and reaching his 50 first, not that any of his team mates acknowledged it at the time! Jimmer also found his rhythm with an array of shots on both sides of the wicket, and there was some good running which kept the scoreboard ticking over, alongside a regular number of boundaries. At drinks, after 22 overs, we were 109-0, and it wasn't until the 32nd over when Swanage made the breakthrough, as Warney was bowled. Will Coleman chipped in with a breezy 23, helping add 43 for the second wicket at a decent run rate. Ferg and Si both went cheaply, looking to add quick runs at the end of the innings, but between the fall of these wickets, Jimmer went to his 100, an excellent knock. We scrambled a few more in the remaining overs, but in truth the late flurry of wickets meant we lost a little bit of momentum; still, having lost the toss, we were more than happy with our final score.

Si and Steve shared the new ball and both took early wickets as Swanage fell to 12-2 after 5 overs, courtesy of catches from Si at mid-off from Steve, and Warney grabbing a sharp chance off Si in the gully, at the second attempt. There was then a 25 minute rain delay as the wind got up, blowing the sight-screen over in the process! At one point we thought we might struggle to get the game completed, but the wind blew the rain through and we were able to resume, with Swanage now chasing an adjusted target of 225 from 38 overs. In truth, they never really threatened to get close to that score. The bowling was tight and this was again backed up by good fielding, particularly from Ed Pattle, who was a live-wire in the leg-side and almost effected a direct hit run-out against their number 3, which may well have shortened the innings considerably had it hit. There were wickets for all the bowlers in the end, with tidy spells from Ed and Fordy, made all the more difficult by a damp ball which had become totally out of shape. Will Coleman took another great catch to add to this season's portfolio, diving away one-handed to his left and scooping the ball inches above the ground. We were unable to take the last two wickets, but 19 points was still a hugely satisfying return.
