Beaminster 2nd XI v Stalbridge Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 31 May 2014 at 1330hrs
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
The 3rd XI march on to 2 wins from 2 games, with a fine win in an exciting match!. After the poor weather last week, a damp wicket was inevitable so it was useful when the skipper won the toss and stuck the home team in to bat first.
Chris Meikle and Henry Chant straight away tied the Beaminster batting down, keeping the run rate very low, but it was the introduction of leg-spinner Jamie Anderson-Deas that saw the first wicket fall. All three young spinners, Jamie, Joe Atkins & George Coleman bowled with control, composure and economy, backed up by some good fielding from the whole team. Jamie took 2 for 38, while Julius Guthrie also claimed 2 victims for just 19 runs in 8 excellent overs. However, it was Jordan Nettley who ripped the Beaminster innings to shreds, with a spell of 4 overs during which he took 4 wickets in 4 balls! Chris Meikle deserves a special mention for bowling his 7 overs for a miserly 7 runs - a big factor in restricting Beaminster to 146-9.
After a fine tea (though it has to be said the onion bahjis caused a few local 'environmental' issues!), we set about the run chase. At 29-3 we were in a spot of bother until Marcus Robertson (49) and U-14 George Coleman (34) took control. On a slow pitch runs were never going to come easy, but they patiently built a fantastic partnership of 81 runs. Though they were both out before victory was sealed (and it left a few nervy moments towards the end!), their efforts were key to winning the game, enabling the team to capitalise on the earlier efforts of the bowlers.
Another excellent win, with valuable contributions from all of the side's younger players. Well done!
