Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI v Swanage on Sat 01 May 2021 at 1:30 pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 36 runs
Match report
Our first league game of the season saw us entertain Swanage at the Park. Swanage won the toss and elected to bowl first, with Colin and Stu opening up. Colin was out LBW for 4 having looked fairly untroubled with the score on 13, before Stu and debutant Rupert Elston put on a partnership of 72. Stu and Jimmer continued to pick up the pace with wickets still in hand, the next wicket falling at 137 in the 27th over as Stu was LBW for a well-made 75. Jimmer then really put his foot down as the last ten overs began and finished with an excellent 89 not out, which led us to a fairly imposing score of 221-5 from our 40 overs.
Steve and Stu both struck in their opening spells, Steve picking up two wickets and Stu three to leave the Swanage innings in tatters at 34-5. We were then interrupted by a fairly heavy downpour, leading to a 20 minute break which reduced the innings by 5 overs, but crucially only reducing the target by 11 runs. Conditions were more difficult following the delay, with a wet ball and slightly wet pitch. However, huge credit must be given to the experienced Craig Wells, who batted superbly for an unbeaten century. Fortunately for us, he didn't have much in the way of support, and Swanage finished on 185-7, a comfortable margin of victory in the end. Having said all of that, it probably shouldn't have ever got that close and there were certainly some tense moments after what had looked like it was going to be a routine victory. Ben Pattle bowled very well to make sure it never got any closer than it did, finishing with a very creditable 1-38 from 7 overs when the batsmen were looking to attack him.
A win is a win but lessons to be learned moving forward.
