Swanage v Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 1:30 pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 65 runs

Match report After arranging an early start so we could get back for the football, light rain meant that we didn't start until just before 1:00pm anyway! Swanage won the toss and elected to field first, clearly hoping the weather might aid their efforts to skittle us out. Stu and Ferg had other ideas though and set about building a solid foundation for the innings with a calm partnership of 61 for the first wicket. Despite some early pressure from the Swanage captain, who probably brought himself off a couple of overs too early, both batsmen looked comfortable until Ferg played all around a straight one and was LBW for 24 in the 15th over. George unfortunately followed not too long after, bowled by a ball that skidded on slightly for 3, and Josh joined Stu at the crease with the score on 72. Once again, they showed the value of keeping wickets in hand, and while they started by accumulating 1s and 2s and picking off the bad balls, they were really able to capitalise in the last ten overs, as we moved from 142-2 after 30 overs, to our final score of 236-5. Josh was stumped in the penultimate over for an excellent 62, and Stu was finally dismissed in the last over, caught on the longest boundary (at the second attempt) for 132. This was Stu's third century of the season and possibly his best, fully cashing in and giving no chances to the opposition.

Unusually, it took a while for us to get wickets on the board in the second innings; not that we bowled badly at all, more that Swanage never really showed any intention of chasing the runs. Stu beat the bat numerous times in his opening spell with no luck, so Si and H took over as first-change bowlers and began to make inroads. Si struck second ball, with Josh taking a comfortable catch at point, and Stu then took a great catch over his shoulder off H to dismiss the number 3. Si then bagged the next two, thanks to two more good catches; the first was from George running in off the cover boundary and then Stu held the dangerous Craig Wells at extra cover, the man who had so nearly thwarted us in the return game at the Park in our first encounter. Si finished with figures of 3-10 from his 8 overs and H returned late on to complete his spell with tidy figures of 1-32 from 8. Will Coleman chipped in with a wicket and bowled well to help ensure that Swanage never looked like chasing the runs, and Robbie Payne was unlucky in his four overs and bowled much better than his figures would suggest. Stu returned at the end to pick up two more wickets, giving us another bowling point, and Swanage finished on 171-7, a comfortable margin of victory by 65 runs.

Although it was frustrating not to pick up maximum points for such a dominant display, it was an extremely disciplined bowling and fielding performance and we could not have done a lot more. Most importantly, another win keeps the momentum going into our home game with Compton House next week.
