Match report Our first game of the new season came against newly-promoted Poole Town 2nds at the Park. We won the toss and chose to make first use of a decent looking wicket, thanks to a lack of rain in the weeks beforehand and of course the hard work of the ground staff! A rapid start from Stu and Warney meant that a decent score was in prospect from early on in the innings, as they added 77 for the first wicket in only 12 overs, with Stu first to go, caught for 39. Ferg fell soon after, with Warney and Jimmer then adding 27 before Jimmer was LBW to left-arm spinner Ruston for 17. Warney was LBW for a patient 34, with the score now 124-4 in the 28th over. The platform had been set and Si and George started to increase the run-rate with a partnership of 48, before George under-edged one from the spinner and the keeper took a great catch. Si was caught on the boundary for a run-a-ball 46 in the 40th over, and we ended the innings 226-9, making sure we were not bowled out. A decent score, but possibly 20/30 runs short of where we could have been.

Although we bowled well enough early on, we did not have a lot of luck and the Poole opener rode his, throwing his bat to good effect. The first wicket was a run out in the 13th over, leaving the score at 78-1. Fordy picked up the second and third wickets, with a simple catch to Ferg at gully and one for Si at mid-on. Unfortunately we were unable to dismiss the opener, who after a streaky start, actually settled down and batted very well. He was eventually out for 108, caught at long-off by Si from the bowling of Ben Pattle, but at this point the damage had been done. Steve returned to add another bowling point, clean bowling numbers 6 and 7, but Poole got home comfortably enough after 42.1 overs. A disappointing result in the end against a reasonably strong team, but certainly positives to build on.
