Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI v Marnhull 1st XI on Sat 21 May 2022 at 13:30
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 44 runs

Match report Marnhull won the toss and somewhat surprisingly elected to field first. A year to the day since the sad passing of club stalwart Martin Hedges, we preceded the game with a round of applause out in the middle. Stu and Ferg opened up, and it quickly became apparent that the pitch was not coming on as well as the one we played on two weeks previous to this, against Poole 2nds. The bowling was accurate, but the slightly two-paced nature of the pitch and an outfield which was not providing value for shots, made it tough going. Stu was the first to go, edging a very full ball to slip, who took a sharp reflex catch. George came in and added some impetus to the innings, striking four 4s and two 6s, and frankly was the only person who made batting look easy at any point in the game. Ferg fell at the half-way point of the innings, clipping one to square leg, and George was slightly unfortunate to drag one on to his stumps, having breezed his way to 39 from 47 balls. This left us 97-3 in the 26th over, knowing that a score of anywhere around 200 would be competitive if we bowled well. Warney and Jimmer put together a much-needed partnership of 44 for the fourth wicket but both fell in the 37th over with the score 145-5. Si and Dikey added 24, mainly in 1s and 2s with the odd boundary. After Dikey was bowled for 15, Fordy added a quick 13 and was run out off the last ball of the innings going for an extra run, with Si ending on 16*.

We started well with the ball, with Stu and Steve giving the batters nothing to score from, and Stu made the breakthrough in the ninth over, the batter barely into his pull shot as an easy catch lobbed to Fordy in the gully. Steve bowled an excellent spell straight through, picking up three wickets in the process, including the important wickets of Ash Young and former Stalbridge player Ed Clements for a duck. Ben Pattle bowled very well coming on first change down the hill, when the left-handed Henry Dimmack (27) was looking to dispatch every ball; Ben got the wicket he deserved, clean bowling him as he looked to play one slog too many. This meant Marnhull were 58-5 in the 23rd over, and well behind the required run rate. There were wickets for all seven bowlers used, with one of the highlights being a superb diving catch on the run from Ed Pattle. Although we were slightly ragged in taking the last few wickets, Marnhull were eventually all out for 146 after 38 overs, as we picked up our first win of the season.
