Blandford 2nd XI v Stalbridge Cricket Club Development XI on Sat 07 May 2022 at 13:30
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 3

Match report The first game of the season took the Development XI to a sunny Blandford. Losing the toss and being put in, the side got off to a steady start and, despite a couple of early wickets, found themselves 92/3 at drinks, with W. Coleman (68) leading the way with a superb fifty. The middle-order all made contributions, in particular M. Coleman (30*), who had to leave the field with a hamstring injury, scuppering a certain fifty! Some, perhaps over keen, attempts a accelerating the scoring by the lower-order and some good catching by Blandford limited the Bridge to 158.

Things got off to an excellent start with the ball, as the two openers were removed without doing too much damage. A particularly tidy spell from H. Forshaw (5-3-8-1 & 3-0-7-2) frustrating the scoring and left Blandford well behind the rate early. Coming in first change, E. Pattle (5-1-2-17 & 3-0-10-2) continued the good work and bowled economically and with a constant threat to leave Blandford struggling at 75/6. The two spinners also got into the game on a pitch offering a bit of turn, and both O. White (6-0-39-1) and O. Moore (4-0-18-1) were well rewarded with wickets, before the captain reverting to pace on the ball in a bid to counter Blandfords attempts to accelerate their innings. A threatening spell from H. Lewis (5.3-0-25-0) was unfortunate not to result in a wicket, and excellent second spells from all the seamers kept the scoring tight.

Heading into the final over with just 9 needed, poor maths from the captain (who thought he'd saved himself an over) saw a last minute decision to throw the ball, and the pressure, to H. Lewis. Harry, though, stepped up assuredly and bowled a really tight line, with runs only coming from a thick outside edge. In the end, the pressure proved too much for Blandford, and an absolutely suicidal runout occurred, leaving them three short.

An excellent win to start the season, and everyone played their part. In particular, a shoutout to J. Lewis who made his full debut for the men's side and fielded and batted excellently.
