Match report
We finally got underway almost an hour after our scheduled start time, thanks to the good folk of the Wimborne folk festival deciding to shut all the roads in the town centre, resulting in Warney and Steve having to walk the last part of their journey to the ground! Having agreed a reduced 40 over game, Si managed to win another toss and we once again stuck to our winning formula of batting first. Jimmer, moving up the order to open in the absence of Stu, and Warney looked completely untroubled in adding 54 for the first wicket in a very solid partnership. Unfortunately they both fell in fairly quick succession: Warney chased a wide one, Jimmer was bowled by the left-arm spinner and George fell in the same fashion in the same over. From 54-0 we had fallen to 59-3 pretty quickly. Si and Wiz looked to take the sting out of the game and added 23, the second highest partnership of the innings. Si was caught behind which meant we were 82-4 in the 23rd over, and Wiz and Dikey both then fell with the score on 90. The procession of wickets continued with regularity, and it was a last wicket partnership of 17 between Ben and Steve that was to prove crucial in the end as we were all out for 118 in the 38th over, a disappointing effort after a fine opening partnership.
In an outstanding display of bowling and fielding as a unit, we then proceeded to strangle the life out of Wimborne's batters. Steve once again set the tone with the first two wickets, bowling the opening batsman off his pads, after he had already been given a life by one of many generous umpiring decisions, and then Warney took a sharp catch in the gully. 17-2 quickly became 18-3 as Dom recovered impressively from a dropped catch to take a far more difficult one in the following over, diving away to his right. As has been the pattern of opposition innings in the last few weeks, the scoring rate was slow such was the pressure we were creating. Warney took another catch from Ed, who again bowled impressively, as did brother Ben, who gave the obdurate opener a good going over before dismissing him with a beauty, caught behind. This was the only decision we were given in the whole innings and ironically there was some doubt around it, but we were more than happy to take it! All the bowlers stepped up, with Howie continuing his recent form with another two wickets, both clean bowled: one was a good yorker, the other beating the batsman all ends up and hitting the top of off stump. Dikey also bowled superbly, coming on at a difficult time as the overs ticked down, but keeping it tight whilst picking up three more wickets: Jimmer took one at slip, Ben one at mid-on, and George took the crucial catch to win the match as a full toss was hit hard and flat to him at deep square leg. This was a seriously good catch, given the pressure of the situation, not to mention the setting sun as it was by now nearly 8:00pm!
What a win! The fielding performance was something to be proud of and a real benchmark for us moving forward. A superb team effort - well played all.
