Match report
Matchday two in the "Thankyou NHS Cup" saw Stalbridge Dev XI take on a very strong Parley side bolstered by players who usually play at a higher level, including players from the 2nd and 3rd XI's. Ultimately, Stalbridge are disappointed not to have come away with a win in a fiercely contested game, and may have been victims of losing the toss on a very hot day and being made to field in the 30+ degree heat.
Things started very brightly for Stalbridge in the field, with Rob Payne (8-0-54-2) and Ben Pattle (8-0-20-2) reducing Parley to 31/3 after just eight overs. Wickets then continued to fall at regular intervals prior to the halfway stage with tight first spells from the skipper (7-1-40-1) and Cam Mckinnon (8-0-52-0) including a fantastic gully catch from Freddie Fowles, who then went on to take wickets of his own with a very attacking performance down the hill (5-0-10-1). In the second half Parley turned the screw, as Stalbridge bowled a few loose deliveries, although Oscar Moore (4-0-13-1) added great control and bowled with guile to peg the run-rate back around the 30th over.
The chase got off to an indifferent start with Stalbridge 26/2 after seven overs. After a small third wicket rebuild, however, things really got going for Stlabridge as Doug Mckinnon (58) once again piled on the runs assisted by Rob Payne (11) to get Stalbridge up to 96/4 after seventeen overs. At that point a lower-middle order wobble saw quick wickets falling, leaving Stalbridge with a real uphill task at 110/6 after 22. At that point, the lower order showed great fight and demonstrated that Stalbridge really could have won this game, with two excellent partnerships, one of 15 between Ben Pattle (15) and Cam McKinnon (30*) and then a staggering 46 run partnership between Cam and Oscar Moore (12) which almost dragged Stalbridge over the line, getting the target down to 30 from the last 12 balls.
All in all it was a great performance against a tough side and 8pts to take forward in the league.
