Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI v Marnhull on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 1:30 pm
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 25 runs
Match report
On another fine day at the Park, the captain finally won a toss and had no hesitation in batting first, on what was another decent looking pitch. Stu and Ferg opened up against what proved to be a very decent bowling attack. The first wicket fell in the third over as Ferg was bowled, before Stu and George dug in to see us through a tricky period. There were not many loose deliveries and a well-placed field made it difficult for a good part of the innings. Stu was caught at mid-on trying to hit over the top for 23 and George followed soon after, bowled for 19. In the context of the match though, these were both important contributions. Jimmer and Josh took up the mantle, and continued to respect the good ball and place value on their wicket, so after 30 overs we found ourselves 110-3. With wickets in hand, it was time to push on, and that is exactly what we did. Jimmer was LBW sweeping for 27 as he looked to increase the run rate, and Josh was dismissed with the score on 142 for an excellent 49, having timed the ball sweetly throughout his innings. It was an innings deserving of a half-century. Col (22) and Si (42*) continued to push the score on in the final few overs, with the last two proving particularly expensive, going for 16 and then 20 runs as the skipper threw the bat to good effect. This had all been made possible by the hard work of the top order, taking us to an eventual imposing score of 204-6.
We didn't have it all our own way in the second innings though. There was a somewhat questionable decision as the very first ball of their innings resulted in a caught behind appeal being rejected, despite a fair amount of certainty that the clear noise could only have been an inside edge. Stu then did pick up the first wicket, another which was clean bowled, but we then found the next wicket hard to come by. Bar a few dodgy overs, we stayed disciplined and although Marnhull remained one wicket down, the required run rate was rising. Pressure eventually told as Colin took a good catch off Dikey, despite Stu's best efforts to put him off with a late call as it was practically in Colin's hands! From this point on, even though we weren't able to dismiss the opening batsman, wickets did fall fairly regularly at the other end as the run rate continued to rise towards 9-10 per over. There were three run outs as Marnhull tried desperately to get Young (84) back on strike, but he was eventually dismissed from the penultimate ball of the match, the last man to fall as Ferg took the catch off Ben's bowling. Ben once again bowled superbly under pressure, as did Dikey through the middle overs, finishing with exceptional figures of 1-28 from his 8 when Marnhull were looking to attack.
This was a complete team performance which gave us a very satisfying and hard-earned win. Everyone contributed and the way we built the innings has to be a blueprint for us for the rest of the season. Keeping wickets in hand for the last ten overs really gives licence to the middle and lower order to accelerate, as we did by scoring 94 from the last ten. Well played all!
