Wimborne & Colehill 4th XI v Stalbridge Cricket Club Development XI on Sat 21 May 2022 at 13:30
Stalbridge Cricket Club Lost

Match report A first defeat of the season away at the very strange Colehill Cricket Ground, complete with three trees within the boundary and a "danger zone" - in which all sixes were dots - that came to plague the team.

Having lost the toss and been set to field, the Bridge got off to a solid start, and when the first bowling changes came W&C were 21 off 8 overs. The lack of wickets was soon rectified when O White (7-0-31-1) did his thing and cleaned up their n.1 bat. With Oscar bowling a tidy line up the hill, what was needed was some consistency from the other end, which sadly did not come as each bowler in turn struggled to get to grips with the surface. Although Stalbridge fielded very well, no real chances came as W&C pushed on from a steady 87/1 at the halfway to 140 when the openers returned to have a go at cracking the partnership. This was duly done, although not after some more damage, with a stunning take in the deep by L. Hedditch of the skipper (8-0-31-1). The very next over, R. Elston may have bettered the effort with a full-stretch diving catch down the hill in front of the pavilion to get a deserved wicket for H. Forshaw (8-0-42-1). Some excellent death bowling by H. Lewis (5-0-30-0) helped keep W&C to 217.

Chasing a rather large total was always going to be tough, but despite a wicket in the second over, Stalbridge dug in. R. Elston (17) and D. Coleman (16) put on 25 for the second wicket, although a flurry of wickets left Stalbridge 55/4 when T. Jeans (47) wondered to the middle. Toby and the skip (36) put on 52 for the fifth wicket and gave Stalbridge an outside chance needing 110 off 13 overs. H. Forshaw (29*) ably supported Toby by very sensibly getting him on strike as often as possible, and the (genuinely large) crowd were treated to an array of six hitting in all directions, including one over the pavilion and two into a building site over the road. By the time Toby was caught, the match was on its fourth ball. The tail kept on fighting, but a few too many were required, and Stalbridge closed on 182/9. The last runs also coming off a bit six by H. Forshaw.
