Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 2 runs
Match report
Well, what a game that was!
The stand-in skipper won the toss and elected to bat on what he knew to be a decent track, with a rocket-fast outfield and a batting line-up bolstered by the presence of Ferg & Dom.
The Devs innings started cautiously with some tight W&C bowling, especially with the young left-armer up the hill getting prodigious early swing. However, with good value for shots on the quick outfield the run rate soon recovered before Colin was first to fall, caught in the covers for 18. Ferg continued to build an excellent innings with a series of partners, eventually falling for a very well-crafted and stylish 70 with the score on 156 in the 35th over, just as we were looking to accelerate.
This left Josh at the crease, after having put on a partnership of 45 with Ferg, to try to take the team to a competitive total in the remaining 5 overs. This he did, with some fine shots himself and some good running from Leon and Richy Brown, as the Dev XI finished on a decent 174 all-out. Josh was last man to fall, with 2 balls to spare, having made an excellent 32.
The total of 174 was 'something to bowl at' but didn't feel to be a commanding total given the pitch conditions.
The two Harry's then continued their excellent form as an opening bowling partnership, with Harry F bowling exceedingly tightly and Harry L carrying a wicket threat with his aggressive pace down the hill. After their opening spell of 12 overs we'd yet to claim a wicket, but W&C were already behind the required rate. The spinning Oscars then took over, each taking a wicket as we started to make progress into the W&C batting, but with one of the opening batters still at the crease it looked like we were going to struggle to contain the scoring if we couldn't get him out and there were signs of heads dropping as the game looked to be drifting away.
However, the team rallied at drinks and when Dom caught him off the bowling of Josh it felt like we were back in the game. Even then, and despite a vital run-out from Richy Brown's fielding and an excellent caught & bowled from Ferg, it looked like it might be too little too late as W&C reached a position of needing 13 runs to win in 5 overs with 5 wickets remaining!
After a very good spell of tidy bowling up the hill from Josh, Harry F returned for the final two overs up the hill, with Fergal continuing down the hill. Though W&C needed few runs to win and all rational analyses would suggest they should ease to victory, the Dev boys were starting to buzz and it felt like the momentum of the game was changing.
Panic was setting in amongst the W&C lower order. Ferg took two wickets in the 38th over (a clean bowled and an unlikely catch parried by Ferg to Colin) then this was followed by a double wicket maiden by Harry Forsh in his final over, the 39th (a clean bowled and a fantastic diving one-handed catch from Dom) to leave Ferg to return for the final over with W&C needing just 4 to win and two senior players at the crease!!
Ferg bowled four excellent dot balls as the pressure mounted on the W&C final pair, before a leg-bye brought the W&C skipper to face the final ball with 2 to tie and 3 to win. The crowd were on the edges of their seats.
With a big swing he made a good contact but the ball sailed straight down the throat of the skipper at deep extra cover as the Dev XI claimed an unlikely and hard fought victory amid much wild scenes in The Park!!
A fantastic effort, which was a lesson for all in never giving up. Pressure does funny things to a lower order batting line-up!
