Witchampton 1st XI v Stalbridge Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2022 at 13:30
Stalbridge Cricket Club Won by 50 runs

Match report It was another glorious day and with the outfield considerably shorter than our last visit, we chose to bat having won the toss. Unfortunately we lost Ferg early on as he edged one onto his stumps, but Stu and George rebuilt well with a partnership of 36. George struggled for his usual fluency and was caught for 10 in the first-change bowler's first over. Stu went with the score on 58 as he bunted a full toss to mid-on for 25, Will was bowled and Jimmer followed Stu's lead, but picking out mid-off instead. This left us in a bit of trouble at 71 for 5 in the 20th over. Si and Steve batted patiently without taking too many risks, and Si began to find the boundary regularly as the change bowlers served up some looser deliveries. Steve was eventually LBW for 10 in the 30th over, but played a key role in the partnership of 57, the highest of the match. Si and H added 16 before Si was caught behind as the opening bowler returned, bottling another 50 as he went for 48, with ten 4s and one 6. The innings subsided fairly quickly after that, with Howie the last to go. We had scraped our way to 149, but with the pitch showing some signs of uneven bounce, we knew a good bowling performance would keep us in the game.

The opening bowlers duly obliged, with Stu making the breakthrough in the third over: a nasty delivery lifted off a length, taking the glove of the batsman, and George took a good catch at head-height behind the stumps. It was 12-2 when the other opener opened the face of the bat one too many times and guided a catch to Si in the gully. Following this, there was a period where we bowled tightly without picking up wickets, but the run rate was well in check. However, with a relatively low score on the board, if they batted the 45 overs, we knew we'd struggle to win the game. Howie came on at Steve's end after Steve had bowled another tight 9 over spell unchanged, and H was immediately in the wickets as the dangerous Bowles chipped a catch to Stu at extra cover. Howie bowled superbly, and wickets continued to fall after this point. Ed picked up the key wicket of the number 3, who had occupied the crease for some time, chipping a catch to Wiz at mid-off. Howie then ripped through the middle order, with another catch each for Si, Stu and Wiz, who took a blinder one-handed at mid-off , sticking out a right hand and plucking it from the air. The game was almost up at this point as the score was now 93-8. The final two wickets were a run out, facilitated by Wiz and George, and Oscar Moore, who had fielded well throughout the innings, picked up his first league wicket for the first team, as George stumped the number 11.

This was a fantastic team performance and thoroughly satisfying win against previously unbeaten opposition. Well played all!
